By Donald S. Conkey – As I observe the concerns over personal freedom and liberty continue to grow nationwide, because of the ‘shifting sands’ of government, at all levels, a biblical parable came to mind. This parable, found in Matthew 7, tells about the “foolish man, which built his house upon the [shifting] sand; and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” By referencing this parable I realize that I am not being politically correct because, according to progressives, the Bible is old fashioned and out of date. I totally disagree with them.
The truth is that the Founding Fathers patterned America’s foundational documents after “the perfect laws of liberty” they found in their Bibles, and caused their children to be taught the lessons of life from their Bibles. Yes, principles of liberty were found in the writings of Locke, Blackstone, Cicero and a host of other philosophers, but the foundational principles of liberty those 55 men crafted into America’s foundational documents in 1776 and 1787 came primarily from their Bibles – and, I believe, from the Spirit of its Author. This book, I believe, is not just a religious book that provides guidelines on how to just get into heaven, it is also the most powerful book ever written as a guide to the good life in mortality – be one a believer or non believer. Unfortunately, the progressives are robbing America’s school children today by removing its principles of liberty from America’s class room, and from America’s society in general.
Most of my generation was led to believe their personal liberty came from the “the cornerstones” of America’s foundational documents, the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. And now we see these foundations of America’s liberties being eaten away by the termites of today’s progressivism. My daughter Linda, in her blog, FamFinder, recently referred to the near destruction of the Morris Island Lighthouse on Folly Beach near Charleston, South Carolina by “a small ship-worm, a small mollusk worm that, like termites ate away at the [foundational] timbers [until they]resembled tattered lace.” Linda indicated she was surprised that the foundation of this “mighty lighthouse, a guardian of the Carolina coastal waters, that had protected thousands of ships from destruction, had not been destroyed by the pelting waves of the ever pounding ocean,” but by an unseen ship-worm.
What a powerful analogy to the realities of how the natural laws that govern the universe are continuously at work restoring manmade structures to nature. But when He gave mankind agency and the ability to create safeguards for our manmade structures He also provided the natural resources in the earth from which to build these safeguards. The caretakers of the lighthouse on Folly Beach have now restored the foundation of that lighthouse by using those resources and it continues to protect the Carolina coastal waters.
Today, as the concern over America’s foundational documents continues to grow, many now believe the Constitution is hanging by a single thread but that it can be ‘restored to its pristine foundation’ by the efforts of freedom loving Americans and the use of modern-day IT tools He has given them.
America’s foundational documents, like the Lighthouse, have been battered by the waves of time and are been destroyed by today’s progressive termites and the “shifting sands” of their progressivism. But America’s are still standing. Luckily the tools, elections, needed to restore America’s foundational documents to their original luster were woven into these documents by the Founders.
The Constitution, created to safeguard the liberties embedded in the Declaration of Independence, states in Article I that the House of Representatives, plus one-third of the senate, must stand for reelection every two years. This year, 2010, is the year to begin electing honorable men and women to Congress. It’s time to restore America’s liberties, liberties that came from the pens of America’s Founding Fathers, liberties inspired by God’s ‘perfect laws liberty,’ those laws given to Moses on Mt Sinai as guidelines for self government by ‘We the people,’ and to live in peace with our neighbors, and protect ourselves from the progressive termites of this generation, the liberties all Americans cherish.
Americans should not be so ‘foolish’ as to allow their liberties, founded on ‘the Laws of Nature and Nature’s God,’ to be shifted to the progressive’s foundation of “shifting sands.” America, be wise, begin to restore your liberties in 2010 on ‘the cornerstones’ of liberty given us by our Founding Fathers.
